Celebrate spring in Coral Gables with the wind at your back and the sun on your face.

Start off at the Museum and then be guided by a personal tour guide through a specific area and or theme. The tours aren’t necessarily mile heavy but more fact and fun heavy. They are open to all levels of riders and even to children that are accompanied by a parent and if under 16 wear a helmet. The tours begin at 11:00am and will conclude with a lunch stop at a local Coral Gables restaurant.

Fountains Pools & Waterways this Sunday May 20th

Some of the more beautiful features that distinguishes Coral Gables from other South Florida cities, are its grand plazas and fountains. These stately places of limestone, brick, stucco, and wood are anchored by beautiful pools like a reminder of the water that exists all around us.

Come see their serene elegance along with our most beautiful pool of all, the Venetian Pool, and ride away with a sense that you’ve been let in on a secret – a secret whispered across time, delivering a memory you will treasure forever. Ride is four miles each way with some walking – bring a bike lock.

We will be stopping at John Martin’s Irish Pub & Restaurant for lunch. All riders will enjoy 15% off their meal.

Space is limited and the cost is $10 per person and $5 for Museum members. Please call 305 603-8067 to reserve your spot

Authenticity and passion are two powerful life currents that flow delicately through the everyday life experience and yet often times yield the most rewarding outcomes. The journey is ultimately up to us to master and it’s also where some of the most valuable pieces of wisdom are learned. Life is what you make of it regardless of who you are or where you come from and for local music producer and studio owner, Daniel Wills, this knowledge and understanding is his key to navigation and triumph, in all areas of his life; music, family, and business.

The fact that Daniel runs and operates a studio called; The Armory is definitely a tribute to his persistence and dedication. Armor is by definition, what you wear to protect yourself during battle. And take our word for it, Daniel is a survivor and carries with him a sense of strength and perseverance that is immediately felt. In fairness, the name, The Armory actually comes from the previous owner of the building, which was the City of Miami, and it was an old Armory facility some years ago. But behind every literal meaning there is a more meaningful interpretation such is the case with the metaphor behind the current name.

Open now for less than a year, The Armory Studios is the mirror of everything relating to Daniel Wills. It’s a welcoming and spacious one-stop spot for all things media and music related. On any given day you’re bound to encounter a Telemundo filming, dance auditions, singing and band rehearsals, and daily drop-ins of local musicians stopping in to chat or lay-down a new track. And there are even times his children can be seen spending the day in the studio. The Armory is an open space for anyone and everyone. It’s a creative outlet for just about every foot that steps in and once you do you’re likely not going to want to leave. It’s just that kind of a place.

We got to exchange some questions with Daniel about his childhood, his first impression of music and what local bands he feels are making names for themselves. He also tells us what artist he would love to collaborate with and what the main difference is between music in LA, NY and MIA.

So you grew up where exactly and what city do you feel really shaped you as a child and teenager?

The mold that ‘shaped’ me would have a sticker on it saying “Made in U.K. and U.S.A.”

I was born in London, yet, before I could even say “Mama” we relocated to New York in Westchester County, Mt. Kisco to be more precise. I lived there for ten years, while my father experienced the absolute peak of his musical career touring the world with Foreigner. So I was shaped in one way as a child in the world of rock n roll, late night parties (that even the children had to attend), nannies and studio sessions with recording legends (unbeknownst to me at the time).

At 11 my family moved back to England, as my parents wanted my sister and I to finish school in England. In my new surroundings I was re-shaped with new and different influences in every aspect of my life. To answer the question, I would say, New York City and London had a very important part of my growing up, making me who I am today.

And what was the first moment you remember music having an impression on you?

I think my favorite and most vivid memories of Music’s first real spark of thrill and excitement for me was in our family living room listening to cassette tapes Dad would bring home from the studio sessions of Foreigner rehearsing their latest songs blaring from some crazy cool stereo he had just brought back from touring in Japan or Hong Kong. My sister and I would run for the nearest tennis racket or cutting board we had that had a handle on it, and become band members and rock out playing air guitar and singing along at the top of our lungs, “Juke Box Hero, Stars in his eyes!” Good times…

Growing up what were your musical influences?

A lot of rock. I got into bands like AC/DC and Skid Row, Metallica, Sepultura, Guns N’ Roses, Van Halen. Stuff like that, but then I also got into other stuff like The Beastie Boys, Nine Inch Nails and The Cure through my Sister’s record collection. (Which was way cooler and extensive than mine even is today.) I was also definitely into classic rock bands like Foreigner, Styx, Billy Squier, Journey, Bon Jovi and Def Leppard. And finally, early British pop and rock stuff like Phil Collins, Eric Clapton, The Beatles and The Who. (A few Zeppelin and Floyd songs I love, though they as bands weren’t really a big influence on me.)

Who were some of your musical hero’s?

Mick Jones of Foreigner, David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, John Bonham of Led Zeppelin (Duh!), Mike Bordin of Faith No More, Zakk Wylde of Black Label Society and Ozzy Osbourne, Sebastian Bach of Skid Row, Slash of G n’ R, Dimebag Darrell of Pantera, James Hetfield of Metallica, Chris Cornell of Soundgarden, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Sting, James Taylor, Bonnie Raitt, Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morissette.

Being around so many rock musicians and their kids how did you stay so level and grounded?

I think the main thing was my parents’ instilling in me a drive and understanding that I needed to work hard to get what I wanted, and that nothing would be given to me if I didn’t deserve it or ask for it! I had to earn everything throughout my childhood through chores or showing a real passion for something for a long enough time. I asked for a drum kit for four years and finally got one for my 13th birthday. I used that same drum kit until I moved away from England 10 years later.

A lot of kids I hung out with who had extremely successful parents had a different outlook on life as most of what they wanted was given to them instantly and without any emphasis of appreciating the gifts they were given. This can affect a human being in later life, as they really are lost when they are thrown into the ‘real world’. When they got lost they would run home. When I get lost, I have to sharpen a pencil and re-draw my own map to get to where I want to go. I’m extremely lucky to have been given the extravagant upbringing I was afforded through my Dad’s success, and I strive everyday to provide that for my own family and my parents especially as they get older. I think family keeps you grounded.

By the way the fact that your parents have been together the majority of their lives is quite remarkable and they’re completely normal. How do they do it?

Normal? HAHAHA. I would say my parents are anything but normal, but yes, they have made it through some extraordinary times together and are now like a 60 year-old teenage couple.

They are the best of friends, they understand that not every day is a cakewalk and life takes work and patience. This is a lesson we all have to learn with time in life, though some of us make decisions to sever ties that hurt us, others are able to get through hard times and come out the other side still together. My parents are the latter. It’s been a great inspiration in my life to practice the same patience and dedication to my wife and family that we have now created together.

And so tell us a little about your career thus far? You’ve done university, you’ve toured with bands, you’ve released an album, and you write songs. You’re married and a father, what else?

Well, in a nutshell, that’s about it! I’ve jammed and recorded with some brilliant minded artists and musicians, both successful and un-successful. I have always recorded music and had a passion for that so I guess my life has been a logical progression to where I now find myself.

I have been a part of opening some extremely successful businesses throughout my adult life, ranging from night clubs in England and Miami, to restaurants in England and Dubai. Every job I’ve ever done, I have put my heart and soul into as I live to make people comfortable and entertained.

Working for Bad Company as a roadie, and Styx as an assistant tour manager and tour photographer all helped my understanding of the bigger picture of what the music industry can provide and it’s challenges.

You met the love of your life in LA and moved to Miami about 8 years ago. How has Miami been for you?

Miami is awesome. Though just like anywhere you live in life, it has some limitations and some frustrating politics.

In Miami, those who dare, win and if you believe in what you do, Miami is an open book for possibilities. The general public in Miami, think they know what they like, though the reality is, especially in the nightlife, what we as business owners, promoters or bands/artists/DJ’s give them, and assure them is what’s up, is really where they will be drawn to and become loyal to. There are a lot of people here who love to claim that “I was there first” thing, but again, it is up to the strong, consistent and motivated to get there first and remain in the leader, rather than the follower role.

Working at Bardot has been my favorite job up until I opened my own business. I think what we as a team created there, with a lot of stubborn persistence on my end, made something new, special and truly game-changing for the Miami independent music scene. We made people listen to the best bands in Miami, and took the spotlight away from the DJ from a promotion point of view. Thanks to Amir’s attention to detail and extensive art collection, we produced an environment that was unlike anything else in Miami. That’s what excites me and gets me going. Something new and fun that makes people second-guess themselves and their taste in Music.

Before working at Bardot, I spent a year and half writing and recording an album with Creed front man Scott Stapp, which was also a truly special and maturing experience, though how it ended, scared me for life as an artist and I think was the final push for me to become a producer/musician rather than trying to become a rock star myself. Dealing with the disappointment of someone being in control of my fate, no matter how hard I worked, is not something I want to expose myself to again.

And where is Daniel Wills at right now in regards to his current path?

Working to get The Armory Studios on the map here in Miami with musicians, T.V. and Film productions and other entertainment outlets.

Developing new artists and recording, mixing and mastering some really awesome new music.

And of course, my main priority, raising a family and maintaining my home life.

Coming from LA, New York and London what is your feel of the Miami music scene and just the scene in general?

The music scene here in terms of talent and musicianship is equal to, if not of greater quality and certainly more varied than any town I have lived.

My take is that the real difference comes down to three things: the venues, the management and the representation of our local artists.

It makes me so happy to see bands/artists like ¡MAYDAY!, Afrobeta, Locos Por Juana and Cris Cab breaking into the mainstream, though I just wish it was something that was on a much higher frequency here. I found Cris Cab on reverbnation.com when I was booking at Bardot and offered him a gig. When Pharell Williams came along as one of his entourage I was elated to see that Cris was being taken seriously and would be taken to where he now finds himself signing a record deal with Def Jam and opening for international acts. We need more of this kind of outlet. Heavyweights like Pharrell to come down here and move our musical product. And not just Hip-Hop and Latin music, which I know have a huge presence here.

As far as the venues go, there aren’t the venues like in New York or LA that have the history and legend behind them, like the Viper Room or Whiskey a Go-Go for example. For me, I was fulfilling a dream to play on stage at The Whiskey as I felt the spirit of heroes like Guns N’ Roses, Motley Crüe, The Doors and so many other huge success stories that cut their musical teeth at these venues. We have the Fillmore, AAA and Bayfront which very rarely ever invite a local band to open for the big acts that come through town.

I love our local venues like Tobacco Road, Jazid, Purdy Lounge, Bardot etc but they are a little small for the possibility of events of the grandeur that places like The Roxy or Troubadour can lay claim to. For example, I don’t see Miami residences like Jay-Lo or Lenny Kravitz doing gigs out and about at any of the mentioned venues, yet in LA you can see Dave Grohl and Jack Black jamming at The Troubadour on a Tuesday night, or get up and jam on an open-mic night at The Cat Club with the rhythm guitarist of Alice Cooper’s band and have Slim Jim of the Stray Cats laying down the drums behind you, while Matt Sorum and Billy Duffy do shots at the Bar. Sure you may here about celebrity appearances at LIV or Mansion on South Beach, but those are nightclubs not venues.

What are some current bands here locally on your radar?

Town, All The Pretty Cars, Brendan O’Hara, Space Between Words, Fulah, Javier Garcia, Jacob Jeffries Band, Cleaveland Jones, The Moon Caravans, Hunter of the Alps, Afro Kumbé, Border Patrol, Dreaming In Stereo, Jesse Jackson, Cog Nomen and Big Brooklyn Red to name a few.

And some Bands that you’ve previously worked with?

I’ve had some of the best producing experiences of my life working with local bands like The Tremends, Space Between Words, Selby, Arboles Libres, Luisa Maggioni, Kristina Pupo, J. Kendricks, TEK. I can’t wait to see who comes through the Armory Studio next to work with to be honest. I start work with a new artist called Mary Richards who played me a song on a baritone ukulele that put a spark in my soul that is the reason I do what I do. She is going to be a great artist to work with I can tell.

What’s your goal for The Armory Studios?

To be a corner stone in Miami for endless possibility and potential and to be respected in the world of music and create a product with every production that earns that respect.

If you could work with any artist who would it be?

SLASH

And what about any artist in Miami?

¡MAYDAY!, Afro Kumbé, All The Pretty Cars, Jesse Jackson, Nil Lara, Nicolle Chirino, Michelle Forman, Rachel Goodrich (even though she now calls LA home)

Any collaborations in the works?

I am starting to do some great collaborations with producers in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Nashville. I am open to collaborating with any Miami producers/songwriters and really get a kick out of interesting collaborations as it can always bring something new out of me as a musician and producer.

Are there currently any new tracks from Daniel Wills on the horizon?

I am always writing new material, although instead of trying to release the songs myself, I am now looking to place them with Artists who can take them further and get them out there. I just gave one of my songs to Robert Elias for his new album, and the song came out 1,000 times bigger and better than if I had just done it all myself and released it under my WILLS project name. I’m extremely humbled and proud at the same time, to have a singer/songwriter like Robert who would even give my material the time of day. Next week I am sending some of my material to a producer friend of mine in Malibu who is going to be sharing the tracks with my all time hero, Slash. So my fingers and toes are crossed for a good outcome there. Stay tuned world, my music will be out there somewhere for you to check out. For now, you can check out the tunes I already have out on iTunes with my band Cowboy Cadillac and my solo project WILLS.

Word Game

Music?

Roadie?

RESPECT

Rock N Roll?

It’s National Bike Month and therefore the majority of our posts over the next three weeks or so will be bike centered. Not a problem in our eyes. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, because today is Friday, which means our weekly “Friday Fitness” post. And this one is extra bike special because not only does it happen to be bike related but it also introduces you to a fourteen year-old, who, in our eyes is quite remarkable.

Nicolas Cabrera, for the most part is a typical teenager, he makes great grades in school, adores his family and enjoys learning to play the guitar. But here’s what separates him from a ‘typical’ kid to that of an extraordinary fourteen year-old, doing equally extraordinary things. Nicolas is a leader and active in his community. He is a member of Bike Walk Coral Gables and attends our meetings regularly. He shares his thoughts and ideas, which as an organization we are most grateful for, as a child’s perspective is sometimes the most accurate and practical way to approach challenges and issues.

Kids keep it real and they’ll tell you like it is. We need more of that in the world. We also need more kids taking the lead and showing by example. And that’s just what Nicolas Cabrera is doing. As a regular attendee of the Coral Gables Farmers Market, Nicolas wanted to do something with the other kids who also attend the Saturday family affair. His idea: create some fun, engaging games relating to bikes, then the kids would gravitate and ease themselves into the rules and basic understanding of biking. Our response: let’s do it!

So tomorrow Nicolas and Bike Walk Coral Gables will be bringing the biking games to the Coral Gables Farmers Market starting at 9:00am. We were privileged enough to have Nicolas take time out of his busy schedule to answer some questions for us about what we can expect tomorrow at the market and what he would like to see implemented in regards to safe streets.

Nicolas tell us how you got involved with Bike Walk Coral Gables?

I first became involved after my father (Commissioner Cabrera) made me aware of the first Gables Bike Day.

And tell us about you. Like how old you are? Where you go to school? What your hobbies are?

I am 14 years old, and I go to Riviera Preparatory School. I enjoy playing golf, and I love to play guitar.

Why is biking and bike safety important to you?

I would like to see more people out and biking around whenever they get the chance without the fear of getting hurt or hit on the road.

What a great idea to engage the kids during the Gables Farmers Market, and during National Bike Month. How did that come about?

I brought the subject up at one of or meetings and suggested we do a Gables Bike Day at the farmers market, and together with Mary we decided to do a kids activity that puts an influence on bike safety for children. Some of these activities include: red light green light, which teaches kids to follow the same rules a driver must follow to stay safe.

And what types of activities will you be doing with the kids this Saturday during the market?

We will be doing three different activities. First, the kids will be drawing and designing playing cards that they can put on their bikes to create a motorcycle sound as the card hits their spokes as they ride their bikes. Second we will be holding a scavenger hunt around the market, which is based upon cycling. And finally we will hold a game of red light, green light to teach about the simple rules of the road that cyclists should follow.

As a young adult, what are some of the things you would like to see implemented in regards to safe streets?

I would like to eventually see many safe bike paths that I could ride on and signs that warn drivers about possible cyclists on the road.

Fill in the blank, “I would bike more if?”

I could ride my bike and feel safer on the roads and not worry about getting hit. I would also bike more if there were bike paths I could use to get to places such as the UM from my own house.

He’s also been a leader and champion for Family Farms, Marijuana Law Re-Form and Bio-Diesel. Willie Nelson is a visionary and activist, he also turns 79 today. Happy Birthday Willie.

Here’s a cover he recently released of Pearl Jam’s track, “Just Breathe.” The track features his son Lukas on vocals along with plenty harmonica and authentic Willie we’ve grown to love over the years.

Every now and then we come across an organization, a brand and or a product that we are immediately impressed by; such is the case with today’s Friday Fitness post. If the words limitless, possibility and minimal resonate with you then the brand and product we are going to introduce to you today will most definitely pique your interest. Founded on the concept, less is more and partially headquartered in Key Biscayne, ZEMgear is a barefoot footwear brand that believes in the potential of possibilities. The idea of open possibility is what makes ZEM’s so appealing and liberating, so much so that the more you wear them, the less you want to wear anything else.

The truth is being barefoot is the most natural and comfortable way to walk on your feet and if most people had the choice and knew they wouldn’t be subjected to germs or judged then we’d be willing to bet that the majority of people would probably walk around more without shoes than with shoes. It’s more of a psychological thing then a physical thing.

So what if we eliminated the psychological component? What if you had an option that is just as close to being barefoot but equipped with technology that still lends safety, support and flexibility while allowing the foot freedom to move and feel the ground in which it walks? Would you try it?

ZEM’s are perfect for anyone that enjoys the outdoors, fitness and sports. They can be worn while playing volleyball, yoga, sailing, biking, climbing, canoeing, running, hiking, camping, walking and just about anything you can wrap your head around that requires your feet to move. They’re that flexible. They can get wet and they dry quickly. ( major bonus for bike commuters ) They are reflective, so good for night activities or rides and runs. They are colorful and comfortable. They are also extremely affordable.

We got to sit down and talk to co-founder, Christina Bracken, a Miami local and Key Biscayne resident about ZEM‘s and why they’re so appealing. Plus we got her to give us a free pair of 360 Ninjas in Lime Green to giveaway. Read on.

So tell us how ZEM came about?

ZEMgear LLC was founded in 2009 by myself, Frank Woods and in collaboration with product designer Matt Ochipa. Together we developed a unique line of barefoot-technology footwear allowing users the full benefit of proprioception, awareness, balance and other health benefits that come along with using your feet as nature intended.

And what does ZEM stand for exactly?

ZEM stands for the ZONE of ENDLESS MOTION, a place for people to discover new possibilities.

You’re a local business here in Miami with operations in California and fairly new, how has the feedback been?

ZEM’s are doing quite well in Florida. Wind and water sports are big here, especially with our beaches. Sand Sports as well. Overall it’s mainly a matter of getting the product in front of people. Once they are able to see, feel, touch, and try them on, they become fans quickly. It’s what makes growing ZEMgear so great, touching so many people.

Biggest question I believe most people probably have, are they safe to run in?

YES! The barefoot movement is in full swing. If you decide you want to run barefoot, Ease into it! Do not go for a run immediately. Walk first, and then test your barefoot ability with a short jog and continue to grow the new muscles flexibility and endurance needed to make a safe transition.

And what is this whole “minimal footwear” culture about?

Consider it, the “new-old” way to think about bare feet.

What kind of styles do you have?

We have many styles and colors, from our indoor only yoga shoe, to a Marine Environment style, a Training and Running collection and Sand Sport styles and they all come in bright colors which make it easy to accessorize.

Where do you sell them in Miami?

Lupa Shoes in the Grove sells them, Island Athletics on Key Biscayne with more stores coming soon. We also sell on-line at www.ZEMgear.com

According to your website, “ZEMgear has a passion for avoiding wastefulness, believing that avoiding waste in the design and concept levels is the most effective way to moderate their carbon footprint. ZEMgear’s operation and production methods reflect their “Minimal all the Way” philosophy.”

It’s commendable that you take that into consideration. Was it a difficult process to implement and what sort of things are you doing within the design and packaging that decreases carbon footprint?

If we do not need to put it in it, we don’t, that’s our philosophy. So everything is MINIMAL ALL THE WAY. Many of our styles do not require a cement assembly line (that’s a very power, labor, and chemical hungry piece of equipment footwear factories use to make shoes ) that takes a BIG PART of the manufacturing process out of the equation. Our rubber is recycled and reduces the need for virgin raw materials. All of our print materials use post consumer materials and are printed with certified soy inks. Our packaging is super-slim (for every “normal” shoe box we can fit about 3-6 pairs). It saves on shipping cost and fuel expenses.

It seems like anyone who enjoys being barefoot or wearing flip-plops often would love ZEM’s? Is that a fair assumption?

I think you are right! We make a split-toe (our NINJA style ) and a round-toe, for the people who cannot stand anything in between their toes.

Here’s your chance to earn yourself a pair!

In as minimal words as possible, tell us what Zone of Endless Motion means to you? Leave responses on the Facebook post. We will select a winner to receive a Free ZEM 360 Ninja in Lime Green. Contest will end on Sunday Aprill 22nd at midnight. Winner will be announced next week. Have fun. The Ninjas are totally worth it.

Also, if you’re looking for something to do this Sunday, which also happens to be Earth Day, ZEM will be out at the Gables Earthfest ready for you to feel, touch and try.

Have a great weekend!
